Program Strategy
Our Mission. To accelerate the greening of China through international collaboration on impactful programs.
Program strategy. Our first step as an organization was to take a comprehensive look at the energy industry, to see where a non-profit organization could have the greatest impact. JUCCCE focuses our efforts on China. If China fails to go green, the effects will global—and catastrophic.
We conducted a series of expert roundtables, co-moderated by McKinsey & Co., that gave us insight into what market levers would drive real change at large scale. We formulated and prioritized our programs accordingly for maximum impact and economic sustainability.
Think big. To make a visible difference we need to aim high. If we fall a bit short, at least we’ve made a larger impact than we would have if we think small. We have a very short time to make a big difference in a large country. As China is still industrializing, it needs to compact thirty years of energy growth infrastructure into ten. JUCCCE asks of our programs, “How can we transform the market?” and “How can we impact the entire country, not just in a single region?”
Think systematically. Impact in energy usage can only happen with an integrated approach to supply and demand. Solutions must incorporate the beginning to end of a deployment cycle (definition, vendors, implementation, financing, measurement). All stakeholders must be included in the planning stage. To think systematically requires clear insight into each sector.
Bust green myths.
Entrepreneurs. New technologies won't necessarily save us in time. Much low hanging fruit is from deploying current technologies effectively, which means services and education.
Businesses. Aligning your business around green offerings can rejuvenate our brand- and your employees.
Industry. Capital costs of green investments can have short payback times and make you more competitive.
Consumers. Going green doesn't mean being uncomfortable.
Policymakers. Going green is not just for activists- it is a necessity for energy security and social stability.
Drive deployment. The Chinese central government is already proactively setting green policies to lead China into a greener era--but local leaders lack the ability to quickly implement. There are many existing technologies that will help reduce energy use and emissions. But how can China quickly build and educate,, at an unprecedented pace, a massive new energy workforce for planning, deployment, operations and maintenance? This energy workforce requires education at every level--awareness, skills building, and leadership development. JUCCCE serves as a bicultural and bilingual bridge, bringing China's key decision makers best-in-class products and lessons from around the world.
Program formula
- Identify a sector’s key decision makers. A handful of people impact our energy use in a disproportionate manner. In centrist China, the 80/20 rule becomes the 99/1 rule. The sales cycle is much shorter because there are fewer people to convince. The ability to make great change is easier because these people affect decisions that impact on an enormous China scale.
- Help them answer “green” questions. Sustainability will occur only when green strategies make economic and personal sense. JUCCCE helps its partners make smart energy decisions by understanding these questions: - "What does green mean?"
- Enable them with turnkey solutions. These decision makers are our “buyers of green solutions”. JUCCCE acts as a neutral salesperson, creating programs around our buyers’ needs. How can we help them go green as fast as possible? What best practices, products and financing do they need?
- Convene top experts and leaders. JUCCCE is a system integrator whose green solutions are created by tapping into JUCCCE’s world network. We bring together multiple partners along the entire value chain, to make it easier for our “buyers” to go green faster. To accomplish the goals of our programs, JUCCCE acts as a bilingual and bicultural hub to align differing incentives.
- Replicate across China with local channel partners. We rely on local partners to provide our programs with access to large groups of “buyers”. In China’s central command and control culture, if you can identify the right partners, you can move very quickly.
- Scale using economically feasible business models. All of our programs rely mainly on corporate support. Our programs create and expand green markets, making more money for our corporate sponsors. Our corporate advisors work with us from the start to brainstorm program design.
- "How can my region go green while continuing to grow economically?"
- "What resources are available?"
- "How do I justify the costs?"
Prioritize programs.JUCCCE is working to make visible change in the way China creates and uses energy within 10 years from our founding in April 2007. This is a general timeframe leading experts have pointed to as crucial in determining how liveable our future world will be.
Our programs are chosen based on three criteria.
- Identifiable impact
- 3 years or less to achieve first major milestone
- Uses international collaboration to accelerate solutions. China's government is actively seeking international collaboration and private sector involvement. As in the Human Genome Project, China needs to harness cross-sector and international collaboration to aid its sustainable development. JUCCCE functions as a neutral hub--connecting people through introductions, events, and the web.
Insight + Influence= Impact. Our fresh approach combines industry insight with unparalleled convening power across all sectors. Tap into the worldwide resources of our leadership network and make things happen.
