Why do energy savings light bulbs matter?

Lighting uses 19% of energy worldwide—and 10% of energy in US homes. An 8 watt compact fluorescent bulb gives as much light as a 40 watt incandescent bulb. A 13 watt CFL is equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent.

So, for every hour you burn a CFL bulb, you save about 5 times the energy used by an incandescent. A CFL also lasts longer (up to 10,000 or even 20,000 hours, depending on the quality of the bulb). That’s less garbage in our landfill.

The problem: the price of a CFL bulb deters most households from making the switch to CFLS, in China.

How can JUCCCE’s program have a big impact?

JUCCCE’s Clean Lighting Conversion program uses an innovative financing mechanism. The purchase of JUCCCE CFL bulbs will be made using proceeds from credits traded under the Kyoto Protocol clean development mechanism (CDM). These credits are received in exchange for each ton of carbon dioxide reduced by the program. Once implemented, the Clean Lighting Conversion Program will be one of the first energy efficiency CDM programs in China.

CFL bulb packaging advertising is expected to bring in additional revenues.

Impact = Energy Savings + Emission Reductions + Education

CO2

Free energy efficient bulbs ~ Tonnes of CO2 offset over bulb lifetime ~ Trees planted ~ Taking this many cars off the road for a year ~ Emissions from this many 600MW coal fired power plants for a one year
10,000,000 2,500,000 12,500,000 417,000 1

The result? JUCCCE will be giving away 10 million light bulbs, for free, to households in Shanghai (the pilot city). This giveaway will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2 million tons, over the 5-year lifespan of the given-away CFL bulbs

JUCCCE has already completed 2 distribution pilots, giving away a total giveaway of 10,000 bulbs. For these distribution pilots, we partnered with Citi Global Community Day and GE.

Leading this JUCCCE program is O Koo, the former general manager of GE Asia Pacific‘s Lamps division. Our team also includes Anne Arquit Niederberger, one of the leading CDM experts worldwide.
