Our Goals

What is JUCCCE?

Joint US-China Collaboration on Clean Energy (JUCCCE) is a non-profit organization that brings together international expertise and technologies to accelerate the use of clean and efficient energy in China. We aim to create visible change within 10 years.

At the fourth US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue held in June 2008, Vice-Premier Wang Qishan called for increased energy cooperation between countries on several fronts, including research and development, coordinated energy policies and increased bilateral dialogue.

Part of JUCCCE’s secret sauce is bringing people together to work on energy solutions in innovative ways. Our bilingual and bicultural network consists of leaders, experts and influencers in corporations, research institutes, media, organizations and the US and Chinese governments. Our programs create unexpected bilateral public-private partnerships which allow us to leap across barriers to progress.

Our JUCCCE DNA

Thanks to the urging of Chinese and US government officials, JUCCCE was launched out of the MIT Forum on the Future of Energy in China (April 2007)

Tapping into a vast network of professionals across many industries, JUCCCE has developed a clear roadmap of high-impact programs which will help achieve our vision of a cleaner future. With the help of McKinsey, JUCCCE conducted a comprehensive study of the Chinese energy industry and a series of expert roundtables. Key projects were chosen for their ability to create the greatest impact, in the shortest amount of time.

"Without a sustainable China, there can be no sustainable world." - Bjorn Stigson, President, World Business Council

China's phenomenal growth has direct global consequences on our environment. China’s growth dwarfs the progress of any other region in the world.

  • Each year for the past few years, China has built 7.5 billion square feet of commercial and residential space, more that of the combined floor space of all United States malls and strip malls.
  • 5,000 new cities and 50,000 new skyscrapers will be built by 2030, leaving an energy legacy for decades to come.
  • To supply this rising energy demand, China opens a new coal plant (large enough to supply all the households in Dallas or San Diego) each week.

Smokestacks don’t respect borders—1/3 of particulate matter pollution in California comes from China. 40% of deaths worldwide are caused by pollution, according to a recent Cornell study.

Western nations would do well to assist China as it eagerly looks for energy solutions.

Getting More JUCCCE per Unit of GDP

China's challenge is in creating a disruptive change in the way it uses energy while simultaneously developing at tremendous pace. Essentially, China must compress thirty years of industrialization into ten, to prevent China's massive energy and emissions footprint from acting as a sledgehammer on the Earth's climate.

Unlike the United States, where solving the energy problem is largely a policy issue, going green in China is primarily a human resources issue. Even if everyone in China received solar panels free of charge today, we wouldn’t have the technicians or necessary personnel to install these systems and maintain them.

We believe people and their ability to execute will be the key to implementing China's ambitious green policies. But can we build this energy workforce quickly enough? How can we get people to achieve more by working together?

Education

A new energy workforce requires education at every level-- building "green" awareness, skills-building and leadership development. JUCCCE serves as a bicultural and bilingual bridge, presenting the best products and lessons from around the world to China’s key decisions makers, in a digestible format.

Collaboration

To multiply the effectiveness of China's nascent energy workforce, JUCCCE facilitates partnerships to share resources. As in the Human Genome Project, massive multidisciplinary and international collaboration needs to be applied to China’s sustainable development. JUCCCE is a neutral hub that connects decision-makers through introductions, events, and the web.

Deployment

We also work closely with specific companies to create customized green strategies. Sustainability will only come when green strategies make economic and personal sense. JUCCCE helps its partners to understand and answer:
‐ "What does green mean?"
‐ "How can my company go green while justifying the costs?"
‐ "What resources are there to help me?"

Our Advantages

  • JUCCCE is one of the only organizations focused solely on actionable energy solutions across China.
  • We are led by bilingual and bicultural industry executives who understand the need to "make green while being green."
  • We are on the ground in Shanghai and Beijing, and provide local insight to our members.
  • We have established China's premiere multidisciplinary and international energy network to find solutions to our energy crisis.
  • Our marketing vehicles help publicize member companies' accomplishments and offerings.
  • Our network gives access to governments, buyers, and partners.
  • We work hand-in-hand with member companies, to create a green strategy that makes economic sense.

What makes organizations like JUCCCE so important in tackling the energy and climate challenges of our day? Our programs are redefining who can make a difference in the energy industry. With a progressive "green" mindset at the central Chinese government level, JUCCCE provides a vision of how everyone can get to the light at the end of the tunnel together-- even if it's still a hazy light for now.
